Today was our second session with Miss Virginia as a part of the Dairy in the Classroom program. Today the learning focused on vegetable farms and Miss Virginia even wore beet socks! We sorted vegetables according to how they grow; in the ground, on a tree, on a stalk or on a vine. We played a game and finished by taste testing some vegetables and fruits. Next week we will learn about fiber farms.

What a great job the kids did dancing at their performance! We also enjoyed watching all the performances. We finished the night with a group dance. Today for our outdoor learning time, we made bird feeders. We will hang them in the Danville woods next week. We decided not to hang any in Hardwick, just in case any local bears are hungry! It was a fun, gluey time. Also, please read over the activity list. We finally updated for the month of March-there is a lot going on. On Friday the Arts Festival begins at 6:30-students will be performing their dance. Today Mrs. Holiman came to visit us and began a five week study of farming. We learned about cows and goats-two animals that are similar. Both are ruminants, which we learned are animals that chew their food, swallow it and then regurgitate their cud and chew it again. They also do not have top teeth. We learned that a cow has an udder and four teats, while a goat has an udder but only two teats. We have been asked to remember three types of cows; Holstein, Jersey and the Black Angus. The Holstein gives a lot of milk. The Jersey gives creamy milk and the Black Angus gives meat because it doesn’t make enough milk to share. We made 2 kinds of butter, cinnamon and plain, then we voted. Most of us liked the cinnamon one better. We are very excited for Mrs. Holiman to come back next week! What a marvelous day to be in the woods. We worked deligently at creating snowmen fit with treats for our woodland friends. It was so warm we got to take our coats off while we made our friendly snowmen. We even got to do some sliding down a very icy hill! After our creations were finished we went off to explore the woods, and happened on the wrong path. Running a bit late for the bus, we all pushed ourselves to make it back on time - right before the rain began! Phew! It certainly was a busy afternoon. A few of our friends even dozed off on the ride home after the excitement! On Wednesday we celebrated our friendships with activities and snacks. We loved opening our Valentines! We also brought a Valentine treat to the woods for our woodland friends. Also, our lean to is really coming along. Enjoy our pictures....it was a busy day! On Monday we will begin to learn about the Olympics. We will learn about the traditions, study the different sports and keep track of the USA medals. On Friday we made “torches” to pass (and to enjoy ourselves) to celebrate the opening ceremonies.
Happy 101st day of school! Yesterday we celebrated the 100th day of school. We started our day by predicting where 100 steps would take us. Some predictions were: outside, to Mr. English's room, to the gym and to Ms. Copen's room. In the end, we wound up half way down the high school hallway. First graders also made predictions about how much 100 drops of water could fill up a cup. We were surprised to find how little water that actually was! We also created gumball machines filled with 100 gum balls and made creations out of 100 cups! With the 100 snack items that friends brought in we were able to create our 100 day trail mix. It was yummy! We spent some time seeing what we could accomplish in 100 seconds, deciding what our lives would be like when we were 100 years old and testing to see if we could eat a lollipop in 100 licks. Only 74 more days left... Today we celebrated the 100th day of school. What a day we had! Our pictures show us hunting for 100 kisses that were hidden throughout the room. Once we found them all we divided them up and shared. Next we saw how many things we could do in 100 seconds (jumping jacks, push ups, hopping on one foot, writing our name, etc.). Then we guessed where we would end up if we took 100 steps out of our room. Turned out we stopped at Ms. Copen’s class and the art room. Next we cycled through 6 centers that focused on the number 100. We built with 100 legos, made a tower with 100 cups, made 100 days smarter necklaces, put numbers in order, put 100 gum balls in a gumball machine and discovered how small our lollipops would get after 100 licks. We finished our day talking about 100 things we would want and 100 things we wouldn’t want. Thanks for sending in treats for our 100 day mix. It was yummy! Only 75 to go! A piece of art made by Griffin Pierce, in Miss River’s class, has been chosen to be on display at the NVRH Exhibition. The exhibit and the reception will be held on Wednesday 2/7 from 4:30 - 6 pm at the Gray gallery inside NVRH hospital in St. Johnsbury. Refreshments are provided, the public is invited. W
