“A little rain never hurt anyone” was our motto today. We were successful finding the fire pit and walked a new trail. We then visited the brook to use our new nets and sifting pans the water was chilly but we still waded in a bit...some more than others! It was a fun day

Monday was our last Dairy in the Classroom. We had so much fun making a t-shirt and taste testing cheese. The cheddar cheese was our favorite. Miss Virginia asked us to wear our shirts when we take our field trip to a farm. Miss Rivers’ class also got to play with their baby chicks. They decided that they love them already. The chicken cam for her classroom is all set. You can go to this web site and watch the chicks. Ms. Ferland will be set up soon. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wA6ZsSGdLat What another exciting day of first grade we had! Ms. Ferland’s class finally had their chicks hatch and Miss River’s chicks continued hatching! A few of us even got to watch the hatchlings make their way out of their shells! In the afternoon, we were able to cheer on our peers at the elementary talent show. Everyone did such a nice job, including five of our own first graders! Our chicks are hatching. Miss Rivers’ class had two by the end of the day and eventhough Ms. Ferland’s class did not have any chicks, they did have a lot of peeping! Our brooders are all set and we are working with the IT department to get our chicken cam set up. Today for outdoor learning we made nest helpers. We included items we thought the birds might like to use to make their nests. Thanks for sending in the dryer lint! This week Miss Virginia talked about chickens and finished up making ice cream. We used a ball and had to roll it for a long time, but it was worth it. Next week will be her last week and we are currently trying to schedule a dairy farm visit. We are hoping to go when it’s a little warmer. We also are very busy with out egg hatching. We cracked eggs and studied the inside, learning why each part is vital to embryos. If you have an extra egg at home we are sure your child would love to show you what they learned. Mr. English came and candled our eggs. We have many babies on the way~a few that may be very small. We are anxious to meet them! Also, the mama guppy in Miss Rivers’ room had her babies......about 30! At community meeting today, two of Miss River’s students read their teaching stories. Griffin wrote and read about wolves while Josh wrote and read about dogs. Great job to both boys! Enjoy. On Wednesday we went to Hardwick trails to make mud paint. We learned a few things....there is no mud yet on the trail and berry juice does not tint mud. We did find some mud near the parking lot. We had a good time eventhough things didn’t go as planned. We brought back some mud with the hopes that maybe we can find something to color our “paint”. All in all we learned that before paint was invented, people used plants and foods to color things. Today Miss Virginia came and taught us about fiber farms. We learned how you go 10 steps from a sheep to a sweater. We then learned the same process for alpacas and rabbits. We finished up with taste testing strawberry and vanilla yoguart. We like the vanilla best. At recess Miss Rivers’’ rode bikes. Thanks to Mr. English for writing a grant for the bikes to be at our school. On Friday we will help the big kids clean them up so they will be all set to go to another school. Miss Ferland class will ride bikes on Tuesday. Well we have been very busy this week. We ventured into the Danville woods on Wednesday to hang our bird feeders, work on our lean-to and explore the woods. A few of us even worked on building little forts. On Thursday we went to the Fairbanks Museum and learned about insects. We learned that their skeleton is on the outside, looked at wasp hives and saw a video of the real workings of a mosquito bite....yikes!
Today was our final Winter Wellness field trip. We had so much fun rock climbing at Lyndon College. We all challenged ourselves to try our hardest, cheered on our friends and some of us even conquered some fears! |
