Today in Miss Rivers' room we learned about trees. We talked about the different parts of a tree. We looked at wooden tree cookies and learned that the outer bark protects the tree from extreme weather, disease and it protects the sapwood. We compared this to wearing a coat during the winter to protect us from the cold. We also learned that the rings inside the tree tells us how old the tree is and that it gets one new ring a year. We also learned that the core in the middle is the heart wood. Then we made tree cookies. We made a chocolate dough that represented the bark and then a vanilla dough that represented the sapwood. Then we rolled the dough to represent the rings in the tree and counted our rings to see how old our tree cookie was. It was a yummy afternoon. We are looking forward to adopting trees during our outdoor learning times.
